Even though Kngine Music & Movies are still in Alpha stage but they work perfectly well in all modern browsers, and we plan to add more features and enhancements according to your feedbacks. So go ahead and give it a try.

CSS 3:

We are glad to announce that we will start using CSS 3 in Kngine results to improve the end-user experience. So we encourage our users to update their browsers to the lastest versions not only to enjoy Kngine more, but also for the enhanced security and the improved performance.

How to update:

Mozilla Firefox: go to http://firefox.com, and download the latest version, or open "Check For Update" from Help menu.

Internet Explorer: go to Internet Explorer page and download the latest version.

Kngine Live Objects:

Kngine Live Objects are our Semantic index  (i.e. Knowledge-Base) that content rich information about more than 10 million concepts. Today we are glad to announce that Kngine Live objects have reached 4 billion piece of semantic information.

However, we plan to reach 6 billion piece of information before  the end of this year.

As part of our true efforts to make Kngine the best search engine ever, we have announced last week that Kngine become faster than ever before. So this week we would like to make Kngine more beautiful and  more easy to use than ever before too!.

We plan to release the next generation of Kngine user interface that called 'Ibiza' next month.

About The Name?

The next planned release of Kngine next month is called 'Spain', so we chosed Ibiza to be the name of our user interface because Ibiza  is Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE AR-SA definitely the most beautiful, sunny, and sexy place in Spain ,Make sense ha ?.

Ibiza Goals?

• Optimizing the vertical spaces: the Widescreen is now popular than before, so  optimize the vertical space was major goal for Ibiza.
• Optimizing the behavior of the Concept selection Section, and Available Results Section.
• Fixing some minor issues.

The Main Changes:

• We realized that we are not using the orange results title bar effectively and the concept selection area was consuming big vertical space, so in order to optimize the vertical space we decided to incorporate the concept selection area with the orange result title bar, see it:

 

• We recieved many feedbacks about the behavior of the concept selection buttons like  Selecting  different concept did not effect the available results section, which make our users wonder. With Ibiza we made the available results section related to the selected concept.

 

• In the past selecting results from available results section was viwed but below the visible results. Like this:

 

But we have learned that this is not the best behavior, now selecting the result will hide the other visible results.

 

Other Changes:

• The "share" section will be visible by default.

Hello Folks,

Kngine believe that Web should be faster.

Over the last period ,We were busy making Kngine faster, today we  are excited to release a faster version of Kngine which is  about 10% to 20% faster and more responsive than before . We also have done some benchmarks, see below:

Homepage compared to others:

Open Kngine homepage fast and mild more than any other Web search engine, even Google.

Web Search Results compared to others:

Just like Yahoo, Kngine results appears within 1.5 second. Kngine is faster than AOL, Cuil, and ASK. Also Kngine is 2x faster than Wolfram Alpha. Kngine also is 2.6x faster than Araby and 4x faster than Yamli (Arabic Search Engine).

We  have just released Kngine Stats two days ago, in  the last two days we recieved a very positive feedbacks about it, such as:

One of the questions we recieved was" what is the story behind Kngine Stats ?!"  Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE AR-SA So now with Wikileaks and all these things going on we decided to share Kngine Stats story with you before anybody leaks it :

The story started months ago:

In order to improve Kngine statistical capabilities, we decided to collect, organize, and index about 65 million records of statistical data from many reliable resources such as: UN, World Bank, CIA Factbook, and others.

When we finished collecting this information, we decided to release them in a stand-alone application first, for benefit of all.

  And now we are going to share some TIPS with you to use Kngine stats better:

• View more than one subgroup?
  • Some statistics content subgroups, like: CIA Factbook Import and Export. You can select more than one subgroup only if you selected one country. Try it.

• How to get the link of the current statistic?
  • We have just added a small text box bellow the sharing icons that content the link of the current statistic, so you can pass it to your friends!
  • The link/URL of the statistic contents the query that we perform to load the data. So you can tweet it!
• How to get a Pie Chart?
  • Currently you can get a Pie chart by adding the following text at the end of the url 'View:Pie' . Try it.

We Kngine Team didn't sleep since our last release, to prepare a few new stuff for our valuable users:

1. More Movies Information, and Movies Trailers:

One  feature in Kngine many features  is providing information about the movies , including: director, writer, cast,  reviews, and direct links to download subtitles. But we pushed our Movies features even further:

Now Kngine provide the average users rate, and MPAA review. Kngine can also view the movies videos and trailers within the search results.  So now you can enjoy the movies trailers, information's, and subtitles.

1. Share button and Social Features:

In the past we were required to copy the URL to share the results with our friends, But Kngine made it much easier! Just click  the Share button and select where to share the results. The share buttons also work perfectly with Parallel Search so you can explore, filter, sort the results then share it with your friends.

 Now you can also connect/sign in by Facebook,  and add comments and like your favorite concepts (City, Movie, Person, Book, etc).

1. More Relevant Web Results:

We made a slight improvement on our Web Results to make it  even more relevant.

What's Next?

What's next is one of the most popular question that we receive, the following pointsare some of  the many things we are preparing for our users:

• Better experience for music and related search.
• Improving the user interface.
• Kngine Pages.
• New and Video Search.

But there are  some other surprises for our users so hold your breath.

In our previous post, we discussed the challenges that we are facing, our goals, and how we are indexing the data. Today we will cover the following topics:

• Knowledge-Based Information Retrieval
• Storage and Processing Systems

Knowledge-Based Information Retrieval:

As we mentioned before, the first step to provide meaningful search results is to understand the document and the query. Unlike the traditional Search Engines, Kngine tries to understand the documents content and index it in a well structured knowledge-base that called 'Live Objects', which allow us to perform what we call it 'Knowledge-Based Information Retrieval'.

First, the Query Layer analayzes the query, then Kngine tries to identify the concept through Live Objects Identity Indexes, which is inverted indexes we use to recognize the concepts and perception words have multiple-meanings. For example when user search ‘Cairo’ Kngine will found many concepts, such as: ‘Cairo, Egypt’, ‘Cairo, Illinois’, and ‘Cairo (software)’. These concepts are sorted inside the index by rank. Also these identity indexes allow Kngine to support multi-languages because every entry into the Identity indexes refer to concept.

After identity the concepts Kngine fetch the concept information from Kngine Live Objects according to the concept type, loading the information is dependant on the analysis process that done by Query Layer. For example: 'Obama Books' return with Obama information, and a list of all books wrote by Obama, while 'Obama' return only with Obama information.

Storage & Processing System:

We have  built all the storage and processing systems we use inside Kngine. Our storage system 'Kngine Storage System'  is a rich set of disk-based data structure that serves variety of use-cases, Such as:

• Inverted Index.
• Key-Value Storage System (Vina).
• Reliable Queue/Stack.

The main component in our Storage System is Vina. The design of Vina -our Key-Value Store System- is similar to Redis, but Vina doesn't support real delete operation. The performance of Vina is also very competitive with the others Key-Value Storage Systems like Redis, Tokyo Tyrant, etc. We use Vina in many areas such as: Store Kngine Live Objects, and data processing.

Built on top of our storage system, we have a small data processing framework that takes care of parallelize and monitors the tasks. Our data processing framework is  an actor based, which  is similar to Microsoft Dryad, But it also can perform small Map-Reduce tasks.
